Making Eating Well Easy in Postpartum and in a Busy Life

Vancouver-based Ayurvedic practitioner Christa De Ridder, originally from the Netherlands, champions the practice of intentional eating, particularly for postpartum individuals. She believes that nurturing oneself through mindful food choices is crucial during this transformative period. De Ridder advocates for making small, manageable dietary shifts rather than drastic overhauls, emphasizing that sustainable healthy habits are built gradually. A key component of her approach is the proactive planning of meals and grocery shopping, which sets the stage for success in maintaining a nourishing diet.

De Ridder's recommendations center around easily digestible and nutrient-rich foods. She suggests incorporating dishes like lentil soup, braised meat, and other simple, home-cooked meals into the postpartum diet. These types of foods provide essential nutrients while being gentle on the digestive system, which can be particularly sensitive after childbirth. Beyond specific food choices, she stresses the importance of establishing a regular routine, recognizing that consistency in mealtimes and other daily activities can contribute to overall well-being.

Furthermore, De Ridder underscores the value of seeking support during the postpartum period. Asking for help with meal preparation, childcare, or other tasks can free up time and energy, allowing new mothers to focus on nourishing themselves and their babies. Understanding individual needs is also paramount, as what works for one person may not work for another. Finally, she advises prioritizing warm, cooked foods over raw options, particularly during vata phases, according to Ayurvedic principles. This practice supports optimal digestion and helps to balance the body during this potentially challenging time.

Christa works with you to balance your health through simple and long-lasting practices. Nature is a guiding force! She loves sharing what she has learned from Ayurveda to help empower you to become your own healer.

With Sage & Saints Ayurveda, Christa offers Ayurvedic assessments and one-on-one coaching, cater wellness events, facilitate on- and offline (cooking) workshops, and host retreats with Katarina Wittkamp from KatarinaYoga.
