In today’s fast-paced world, the demands placed on caregivers—especially mothers and birth workers—are immense, making it more important than ever to tend to our own well-being. On a recent episode of the Sacred Window Podcast, host Christine Eck welcomes Kristen, an Ayurvedic health counselor, somatic stress release facilitator, resilience coach, and dedicated mother, for an inspiring conversation about nervous system health and practical strategies for navigating chronic stress.
The Nervous System at the Heart of Healing
Kristen’s journey began in Ayurveda school and blossomed into a dedicated career supporting those most in need: caregivers. She emphasizes that within Ayurvedic practice, the nervous system isn’t an isolated player—it’s interconnected with every system in the body. Through routine, food, herbs, and sensory interventions, Ayurveda offers powerful tools to balance the nervous system, particularly the delicate Vata dosha, which is so easily pushed off center by the pace and pressures of modern life.
Kristen shared her personal turning point—after her son was born at age 42, she found herself overwhelmed, fatigued, and diagnosed with Hashimoto’s. Despite her wealth of knowledge, it wasn’t until she fully committed to daily practices—simple, accessible acts like self-massage and yoga nidra—that her health and sense of resilience were truly restored.
Modern Challenges, Ancient Solutions
Both Christine and Kristen see the same struggle reflected everywhere: chronic stress has become normalized. But as Ayurveda teaches, living out of sync with our natural rhythms depletes us, especially caregivers, who often put their needs last. With constant external stimuli and societal expectations, it’s easy to disregard “small” self-care steps—yet these practices are foundational to restoring balance.
Practical Tips: Rituals for Nervous System Resilience
Kristen recommends building micro-practices into daily life, no matter how busy you are:
- Sensory Withdrawal: Occasionally turning off lights, sounds, and screens offers the nervous system a chance to reset. Even a few minutes can bring profound relief.
- Somatic Pause: Throughout the day, check in with your body. Where is there tension? Can you bring breath or gentle movement to those areas?
- Make Routine “Medicinal”: Everyday tasks—showering, eating, walking—can become healing rituals with mindful attention and presence. No need for elaborate routines; small, consistent steps matter most.
- Movement and Nature: Whether it’s a short walk, dancing to a favorite song, or simply looking at the sky, finding moments of movement and connection with nature helps release stress.
The Power of Community and Ritual
Kristen’s work includes one-on-one coaching, retreats, and her own podcast, The Nervous System. Her upcoming “Rhythm and Ritual” program will guide participants in incorporating seasonal rhythms and collective support for deeper resilience. Community, Kristen reminds us, magnifies the impact of personal healing.
Rest as Revolution
Perhaps most poignantly, Kristen believes that self-love and rest are revolutionary acts—by honoring our needs and making space for healing, we ripple change into our families, communities, and society at large.
An Invitation to You
How can you create moments of medicine in your own life today? What “small” step might help you ground, reset, and reconnect with yourself? As Kristen shares, there is no one right way—discover what nourishes you and make it a gentle priority.
Let’s nurture our resilience and honor the sacred work of caregiving, for ourselves and our communities.
