Recently on the Sacred Window Podcast, we welcomed Morgan Henry Kerr—founder of “I am Mamo,” queer parenthood consultant, and community builder. Morgan’s journey shines a light on the unique challenges that queer families face in the world of conception, pregnancy, and postpartum care.
Personal Journey: Navigating Barriers Morgan shared her deeply personal experience of trying to conceive as a queer parent, confronting repeated disappointments and an overwhelming lack of guidance tailored for non-heteronormative families. She described the “repetitive grief” and emotional labor of 16 IUIs, the isolation that results from insufficient resources, and the frustration of being othered in a system built around binary assumptions.
Beyond Tokenism: Real Allyship in Care A recurring theme throughout the interview was the necessity for genuine, consistent allyship in birth work—far surpassing performative gestures like pronoun fields or rainbow stickers during Pride month. Morgan emphasized the importance of trust, demonstrating support through all stages: from initial outreach on social media to the environment of a physical practice, to the language used in consultations and ongoing client relationships.
Building Circles of Care Practical steps for professionals include:
- Auditing intake forms and resources for inclusive language and representation.
- Showcasing diversity on social platforms and in practice spaces.
- Building a referral network of queer-competent providers and allies.
- Listening deeply, asking open-ended questions, and validating each individual’s unique path.
- Providing resources for continued support beyond the direct scope of care.
Equity versus Equality in Birth Work Morgan highlighted that supporting queer families requires recognizing unique challenges and crafting equitable—not just equal—support systems. Understanding diverse journeys and actively working to remove barriers are crucial for true inclusion.
A Call for Courage and Commitment For those in the birthing, doula, and care communities, Morgan encourages stepping up: “Stop hesitating and do the work.” The goal is to foster safety, rest, and healing for every family, honoring each story and creating lasting change in the culture of care.
Resources For more guidance, Morgan offers weekly reflective sessions and an “Inclusive Birth Worker Guide” on Instagram at @iam.mamo and @inclusivebirthworkerguide.
