  • Why Honoring Your Cycle Matters: Beyond Birth Control With Andrea St. Jules
Spread the love

Our lives as women are woven with cycles—moments of transition that offer opportunities for profound self-discovery, healing, and connection. In a recent conversation with Andrea St. Jules, a seasoned birth and postpartum doula rooted in Ayurvedic traditions and holistic wisdom, we explored how honoring these “sacred windows” shapes not only our wellbeing but ripples out into our communities and future generations.

Andrea’s Story: Rediscovering Feminine Wisdom
Andrea’s journey began, as so many do, with early menstrual experiences shaped by pain, discomfort, and quick fixes—prescription pills and birth control, accepted without question. Years later, an unexpected pause led her away from automatic routines and toward deep, intentional healing. Traveling to Brazil, ritual, and spiritual inquiry all revealed a clear life purpose: to help heal the wounded feminine and to reclaim rites of passage for herself and others.

Honoring Our Cycles
Andrea and I reflected on how our menstrual cycles impact every facet of life, from fertility and hormones to self-perception and social expectations. Many of us were never taught to honor the first bleed, leading to cultural silence, shame, or neglect. Andrea’s healing practices—free bleeding, mindful rest, and treating menstruation as a sacred time—transformed her relationship with her body and eased her transition into menopause.

Nature as Teacher and Ally
Central to Andrea’s philosophy is connection with nature. She described how immersing herself in natural cycles, collecting waters from meaningful places, and unplugging from modern stressors supports her sense of rhythm and balance. In a world of artificial light and constant stimulation, nature offers a reset—reminding us of our strength, intuition, and purpose.

The Challenge—and the Invitation
While taking time to rest during menstruation or other rites of passage can be difficult—especially for those with families or demanding roles—the conversation highlighted the power of modeling these practices for others. As more people claim space for their needs, we weave new norms into the fabric of society. Even small shifts, when made consistently and with intention, can have a meaningful impact.

A Way Forward: Community and Cultural Change
Andrea envisions a world where thriving is the standard, not just surviving. This vision calls for more conversation, transparency, and support—not just among women, but with men and families as well. Honoring cycles and rituals isn’t only about healing individuals; it’s about fostering communities where everyone can experience deeper connection and fulfillment.

Final Thoughts
Our cyclical nature—marked by menstruation, postpartum, and menopause—is not a set of isolated events but a continuous thread of wisdom and transformation. When we celebrate these sacred windows, we step into our authenticity, power, and joy, offering the next generation a foundation built on respect, self-knowledge, and thriving.

Let’s keep the conversation going, make space for our own sacred rhythms, and work together to cultivate a society that honors the cycles of life.

About Andrea:

Andrea is a birth worker, yoga teacher, and devoted student of the feminine healing arts. Her path began in 2011 after a life-changing journey to the Amazon rainforest, which inspired her to found Graceful Warriors—a pioneering platform for women’s empowerment and sisterhood in Vancouver.

Over six years of facilitating circles, workshops, and womb-healing gatherings, she discovered birth as the true origin of her soul’s calling.

Trained initially as a doula in 2013 with Kara Maria Ananda and later through Pacific Rim College’s Holistic Doula program, she weaves together herbal medicine, homeopathy, acupressure, and nutrition in her care. In 2024, she began advanced study with the Center for Sacred Window Studies’ Conscious Postpartum Caregiver program, deepening her devotion to Ayurvedic and holistic postpartum care.

Rooted in Nature and over two decades of spiritual and ceremonial practice, she brings a calm, nurturing presence to her work. Through pre- and postnatal Yoga Nidrā, she offers restorative meditations that guide women into deep rest, preparation, and healing through every threshold of motherhood.
