  • The Matriarchal Model of Nourishment with Christine Eck
Spread the love

There was a moment recently that has stayed with me.

I was walking with a dear friend through her garden—hands in the soil, surrounded by something she had tended with so much care. And she looked at me, almost with tears in her eyes, and said, “It has to happen here. I’m just going to create it.”

She wasn’t talking about a business.

She wasn’t talking about a program.

She was speaking to something much deeper—a remembering.

A knowing that the way we are living… the way we are caring… is out of balance.

And that something else is asking to be born.

We Can Feel the Imbalance

If we’re honest, many of us feel it.

There is a quiet (and sometimes not-so-quiet) sense that care has been overlooked—externally in our systems, but also internally in our own lives.

We rush past what our bodies are asking for.

We override what our hearts are whispering.

We meet expectations that were never truly ours.

And in doing so, we lose connection to the very thing that sustains us: nourishment.

Not just through food—but through presence, attention, listening, and slowness.

A Different Way Is Already Emerging

And yet… something else is happening beneath the surface.

We see it in the women who feel called to gather.

We hear it in the longing for community, for sisterhood, for a different rhythm of living.

We feel it in ourselves when we begin to ask:

What would it look like to truly care—for myself, for others, for my community—in a way that is conscious, grounded, and deeply nourishing?

This is the beginning of the matriarchal way of care.

And it doesn’t begin with something grand.

It begins in the smallest, most ordinary moments.

It Begins With Nourishment

I have witnessed this over and over again in our retreats.

Not in the big teachings—but in the kitchen.

In the simple act of preparing food together.

There was a moment when a woman arrived at one of our trainings having just received concerning health news. Without hesitation, the entire space shifted. Meals were adjusted. Ingredients changed. Attention moved toward her needs.

Not because anyone was instructed to do so.

But because the culture of care was already alive.

This is what happens when we slow down enough to truly see one another.

There is a natural response that arises:
What is needed here?

And from that place, care becomes intuitive.

Relational.

Alive.

The Postpartum Window Is Just the Beginning

In our work, we often speak about the postpartum window as a sacred time of transformation.

And it is.

But what we begin to see—when we widen our lens—is that these windows exist throughout our lives.

Moments of transition.

Moments of becoming.

From early initiation, to motherhood (in all its forms), to the powerful threshold of menopause and beyond.

Each one asks something of us.

Each one invites us into deeper awareness, deeper nourishment, deeper care.

And each one offers the opportunity to step into a new level of wisdom.

Stepping Into Eldership

There comes a point in our lives where something shifts.

Where we are no longer just seeking guidance—we are becoming the ones who hold it.

This is the path toward eldership.

Not as a role we claim, but as a way of being we embody.

It asks us to look inward:
How am I caring for myself?

How am I tending to my own balance?

How am I showing up in my relationships, in my community, in my work?

From this place, we begin to lead—not through authority, but through presence.

Through lived experience.

Through the quiet confidence that comes from walking the path ourselves.

This Work Begins at Home

It can be tempting to think that change happens “out there.”

In systems. In structures. In institutions.

But the truth is—it begins much closer.

It begins in our own homes.

In the way we nourish our bodies.

In the way we speak to ourselves.

In the way we show up for the people right in front of us.

From there, it ripples outward.

Into our communities.

Into our work.

Into the families we serve.

And slowly, gently, the balance begins to shift.

You Are Already Part of This

Whether you realize it or not—you are already part of this movement.

Each of us carries a thread of this larger tapestry of conscious care.

Each of us has the capacity to begin, right where we are.

With what is in our own hands.

With what is in our own heart.

And when we do, something powerful happens:

We remember that we are not alone.

We begin to find one another.

We begin to gather.

A Gentle Invitation

If you have been feeling this longing…

This sense that there must be another way to live, to care, to serve…

You are not imagining it.

And you are not alone.

This is the work we are stepping into together.

Through nourishment.

Through community.

Through the steady, grounded practice of conscious care.

So I’ll leave you with this:

What is one small way you can begin to bring more nourishment into your life today?

Because it begins there.

And from there… everything changes.
